a vr celebration of hilma af klint

This is a VR painting I did for International Womens Day. I wanted to celebrate Hilma af Klint, a Swedish painter working about 100 years ago who was not super recognized in her time. Her abstract paintings were wild, and came before the men who are credited with bringing abstraction into the conversation in the West, like Mondrian and Kandinsky!

There was a big exhibition of her work at the Guggenheim in 2018. She was into some intense spiritualism and even said she met a spirit In her seances who commissioned a bunch of paintings. When I read that, I thought she would have gotten a kick out of VR. So I recreated one of her paintings in Tilt Brush to bring one of her paintings into a new, less tangible space. I chose β€˜The Swan, No 1, Group IX, 1915.’ for the balance and beauty of the swans.
